Pakistan Mango Production Declines as Parliamentary Committee Flags Industry Concerns

A parliamentary panel has expressed concern over a continued decline in Pakistan’s mango production, with growers attributing the trend to reduced demand for natural mango pulp following changes in beverage industry regulations.

The matter was discussed during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research, chaired by MNA Tariq Hussain. Representatives of the Multan Mango Growers Association briefed lawmakers on the challenges facing the country’s mango sector.

Growers link decline to changing beverage industry demand

Growers told the committee that demand for natural mango pulp has decreased in recent years as beverage manufacturers increasingly rely on artificial sweeteners and synthetic additives.

They argued that the shift has directly affected the consumption of mango-based products used in juice and beverage production, reducing market opportunities for local growers and processors.

According to the association, natural mango pulp was widely used in the beverage industry before 2021. However, they said regulatory changes introduced by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority allowed greater use of artificial sweeteners and additives, leading to a decline in demand for fruit-based ingredients.

Health concerns also reviewed

The committee also reviewed broader health implications linked to synthetic beverages. Officials from the Ministry of National Health Services informed lawmakers about findings from the National Institute of Health, indicating that frequent consumption of such drinks may be associated with adverse health effects.

Lawmakers noted the need to balance industrial formulation standards with public health considerations and agricultural sustainability.

Production drop raises policy concerns

During the briefing, members were informed that Pakistan’s mango production has declined from approximately 2.2 million tonnes to 1.8 million tonnes in recent years.

The committee discussed the importance of addressing production challenges, improving value chains, and strengthening export strategies to protect one of Pakistan’s most important horticultural sectors.

Calls for policy coordination

Participants stressed the need for coordinated policy measures between regulatory bodies, the food industry, and agricultural stakeholders to support mango growers and enhance export competitiveness.

The committee is expected to further examine the issue in upcoming sessions as part of broader efforts to strengthen national food security and agricultural output.
