A major banking fraud case has emerged in Lahore, where more than 170 customers of a private bank were allegedly affected by a data leak.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested a three-member gang in connection with the case.
Among those arrested are a private bank officer and a woman.
Wealthy customers allegedly targeted
According to the FIA investigation, the suspects allegedly used leaked customer information to identify wealthy account holders.
They reportedly changed customers’ addresses and requested replacement ATM cards.
The suspects then allegedly monitored the customers’ homes and collected the cards from delivery workers outside other houses.
Investigators say the gang used the bank’s internal system to identify millionaire customers before targeting their accounts.
Rs150 million allegedly withdrawn
The FIA says the suspects allegedly withdrew around Rs150 million from the accounts of five customers.
The investigation is continuing to determine the full extent of the fraud and how customer information was accessed and misused.
The arrests have also raised fresh concerns about the protection of sensitive customer data within banking systems.
Authorities are now investigating the role of the bank employee and other members of the alleged gang.
