Pakistani international athlete and Asian champion Jamal Said has made history by becoming the first Pakistani to complete the grueling journey from K2 Base Camp to Skardu in just four days, marking a major milestone for the country’s adventure sports community.

The endurance challenge, which traverses one of the world’s most demanding mountain routes, showcased the athlete’s exceptional stamina, resilience, and determination while drawing attention to Pakistan’s growing potential as a destination for adventure tourism.

Historic Four-Day Journey

Jamal Said began his mission from K2 Base Camp, situated at the foot of the world’s second-highest peak, on July 26.

Over the next four days, he navigated high-altitude mountain passes, glaciers and rugged terrain before successfully reaching Skardu, becoming the first Pakistani to accomplish the feat within this timeframe.

His achievement has been widely praised as a landmark moment for endurance sports in Pakistan and a source of national pride.

One of the World’s Most Challenging Routes

The route connecting K2 Base Camp and Skardu is considered one of the toughest trekking and endurance courses globally.

Athletes undertaking the journey must contend with:

  • High-altitude conditions
  • Extreme and unpredictable weather
  • Massive glaciers
  • Rocky mountain terrain
  • Physically demanding river crossings and trails

Completing the route by running in only four days highlights an extraordinary level of physical endurance, mental strength and preparation.

Recognition in Shigar

Following the completion of the challenge, Jamal Said was welcomed in Shigar by Deputy Commissioner Sher Afzal, who congratulated the athlete on his achievement.

The deputy commissioner presented Said with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his historic accomplishment, describing it as a proud moment for both Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan.

Promoting Tourism and Healthy Lifestyles

Speaking after finishing the challenge, Jamal Said said the initiative was designed not only to set a new endurance record but also to showcase the spectacular landscapes of Gilgit-Baltistan to a global audience.

He said promoting tourism while encouraging young people to adopt healthy lifestyles through outdoor and adventure sports was one of the campaign’s primary goals.

According to Said, inspiring the younger generation to embrace endurance challenges and explore Pakistan’s natural beauty remains central to the initiative.

Young Athletes Join the Campaign

As part of the campaign, international junior athlete Haris Jamal and several other children participated in a 10-hour endurance race, reinforcing the project’s focus on youth engagement in adventure sports.

Organisers believe involving young athletes will motivate more children and teenagers to participate in outdoor activities, endurance competitions, and mountain sports.

Boost for Adventure Tourism

Experts say Jamal Said’s achievement could help strengthen Pakistan’s reputation as an emerging destination for adventure tourism.

The successful completion of the K2 Base Camp to Skardu route is expected to attract greater international attention to the country’s mountain landscapes while encouraging more local athletes to pursue endurance sports.

The accomplishment also highlights the untapped potential of Gilgit-Baltistan for hosting world-class adventure events and promoting sustainable tourism.
