Netanyahu Seen as Obstacle to Peace as US Pushes New Iran Talks With Pakistan

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is once again being viewed as a key obstacle to diplomatic progress, following reports of a tense phone call with Donald Trump over renewed efforts to engage Iran in negotiations.

According to a US newspaper, Pakistan and Qatar are actively involved in mediating a new draft agreement aimed at restarting dialogue with Tehran. President Trump has also confirmed that intermediary countries are working on a letter of intent to pave the way for formal talks.

Trump has stressed that any negotiations with Iran will cover both the nuclear programme and security issues related to the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, a 30-day negotiation window would begin after the draft agreement is signed.

However, Netanyahu has reportedly voiced strong opposition to renewed talks with Iran. He has signalled a preference for military action and renewed strikes, placing him at odds with the US administration’s push for a diplomatic settlement.

Despite these differences, reports suggest Netanyahu may travel to Washington in the coming weeks for direct discussions with President Trump, as efforts continue to align US and Israeli positions.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that it is reviewing the new draft proposal. However, Tehran has not indicated any major flexibility so far.

Iranian officials have reportedly demanded the restoration of frozen Iranian funds by the United States and a ceasefire in Lebanon involving Israel as conditions for meaningful progress.

The developments highlight growing tensions between diplomatic efforts led by Washington and resistance from Israel, raising questions about the future of regional stability and the prospects for a negotiated agreement.
