Marwat denies directly accusing Punjab CM of plotting assassination. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat clarified his stance regarding allegations of an assassination plot against him allegedly orchestrated by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Marwat, who was summoned by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime wing to address a tweet implicating Nawaz, denied directly accusing her of involvement in the purported scheme.
Marwat denies accusing Punjab CM of plotting assassination
Marwat’s tweet on March 9 sparked controversy, with him stating that Nawaz posed a threat to his life and had organized an assassination attempt against him.
This led Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Barrister Aqeel Malik to file a complaint against Marwat with the FIA, prompting an inquiry into the matter.
During questioning by the FIA, Marwat clarified that while he did not explicitly name Maryam Nawaz as the mastermind behind the assassination plot, he had received information indirectly from MNA Naseem Ali, who claimed to possess evidence regarding the plot.
Marwat suggested summoning Ali to provide substantiating evidence for the allegations.
Public Allegations and Claims
Marwat’s tweet and subsequent statements to journalists outside Parliament House on March 9 accused the Punjab CM of employing “contract killers” to target him, alleging tangible financial transactions involved in the alleged plot.
He asserted that if any harm befell him, the PML-N would be held responsible. Despite threats to his safety, Marwat expressed his determination not to be intimidated.
Further Allegations and Calls for Investigation
Marwat also claimed that individuals in India were contacted, allegedly at the behest of the Punjab CM, to plan his murder.
He stated having audio messages supporting these claims and urged authorities to probe their contents thoroughly.
Political Climate and Concerns
Marwat highlighted the increasingly perilous nature of politics in Pakistan since May 9, stating that dissenting voices were met with threats of kidnapping or murder.
He alleged that powerful members of the PML-N were intolerant of opposition.
