Lahore Heatwave to Persist With Feels-Like Temperature Up to 50°C

NIH Issues Heatstroke Alert as Temperatures Rise

The severe heatwave gripping Lahore is expected to continue today and tomorrow, with the feels-like temperature likely to rise between 48°C and 50°C, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Meteorological officials say increasing humidity levels are intensifying heat stress, making conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature.

Rising Humidity Intensifies Heat

Meteorological Department Director Aleemul Hassan said moisture in the air is increasing, which is worsening heatwave conditions across the city.

He warned that the combination of high temperatures and rising humidity would keep extreme heat in place through this evening and into tomorrow. Residents may experience dangerous heat stress even during non-peak hours, he added.

Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, limit direct exposure to sunlight, and drink plenty of water to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Heatwave Expected to Persist

According to the Meteorological Department, Lahore’s heatwave is unlikely to ease before tomorrow night. Officials cautioned that vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, face a higher risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Citizens have been advised to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours and seek medical help immediately if symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or extreme fatigue appear.

PDMA Issues Pre-Monsoon Alert

Separately, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority has issued a province-wide pre-monsoon alert ahead of expected rainfall from July 1 to July 6.

The authority warned of potential urban flooding in major cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad, as monsoon activity strengthens.

Rainfall is forecast in several districts such as Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, and Faisalabad. Additional showers are expected in central and southern Punjab between July 3 and July 6.

Authorities Directed to Remain on Alert

PDMA Director General Umar Javed said alerts have been issued to commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to ensure emergency preparedness.

He urged the public to remain indoors during lightning, dust storms, and strong winds and advised farmers to take precautionary steps to protect crops and livestock amid changing weather patterns.

Tourists traveling to northern areas were also advised to exercise caution and follow official advisories due to the risk of landslides and flash floods.

In case of any weather-related emergency, citizens have been instructed to contact the PDMA helpline at 1129.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of staying alert, following official guidance, and avoiding unnecessary travel as Punjab transitions from extreme heat into the monsoon season.
