The Balochistan government has decided to launch a modern Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Quetta, following the rollout of similar mass transit projects in several other major Pakistani cities.
According to Transport Department officials, the provincial government has approved moving forward with the proposed BRT project to improve public transportation in the provincial capital.
Five foreign companies have already expressed interest in conducting the project’s feasibility study.
Feasibility Study to Precede Ground Work
Officials said one of the interested foreign companies will be selected to carry out the feasibility study. Practical work on the project is expected to begin only after the government receives the study’s findings and reviews its recommendations.
Project Cost and Timeline
The Quetta BRT project is estimated to cost more than Rs. 300 billion, according to Transport Department officials, with authorities targeting completion by 2032.
Quetta Joins Other Pakistani Cities With BRT Systems
With this decision, Quetta becomes the latest major Pakistani city to pursue a BRT system, following Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Karachi, and Peshawar, which have already introduced similar mass transit networks.
