China Rejects US Sanctions Over Iran Cooperation

China has rejected sanctions imposed by the United States on Chinese companies over alleged cooperation with Iran, calling the measures unfair and unacceptable.

The response came on Monday after Washington announced new sanctions targeting several individuals and companies, including firms based in mainland China and Hong Kong, over accusations linked to Iran’s drone and missile programmes.

China defends its companies

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a regular press briefing that Chinese companies were operating in line with the law.

He said these firms should be allowed to continue their normal business activities. And he added that Beijing would firmly safeguard the lawful rights and interests of its companies.

Criticism of US approach

Guo criticised Washington for using conflict as a justification to target other countries. He said it was wrong to use war as a pretext to malign another state.

But he stressed that preventing further escalation and avoiding wider conflict should remain the top priority for the international community.

Opposition to secondary sanctions

China also voiced strong opposition to what it described as the United States’ pressure campaign against Tehran.

Beijing rejected the use of secondary sanctions, particularly those targeting foreign financial institutions and Chinese oil refineries involved in trade with Iran.

Chinese officials said such measures undermine international trade norms and further complicate efforts to reduce regional tensions.
