Russia Backs Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Control as Putin Warns of Declining Western Power

Russia has stated that Iran holds sovereign rights over the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.

Speaking at the United Nations, Russia’s ambassador argued that Iran has full legal authority to regulate and restrict shipping traffic within its territorial waters, particularly in times of conflict.

He further accused Western nations of hypocrisy and alleged involvement in what he described as “maritime piracy,” escalating diplomatic rhetoric over control of strategic sea lanes.

The ambassador emphasized that international law allows coastal states to impose limitations on maritime movement when national security is at risk, framing Iran’s position as consistent with established legal norms.

Putin Highlights Decline of Western Influence

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his view that Western dominance in global affairs is steadily weakening, as emerging economies in the Global South gain greater influence.

In a recorded address to participants of the Open Dialogue international forum, Putin said the traditional global order and established economic systems are undergoing structural change.

He argued that this shift has been accelerated by Western policies, which he claimed have undermined their own leadership position in global governance.

According to Putin, the world is transitioning toward a more complex and multipolar system in which sovereignty-focused nations are playing an increasingly central role in shaping international relations and economic development.

Growing Geopolitical Tensions

The remarks come amid heightened global concern over maritime security in the Middle East and broader strategic competition between major powers. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most sensitive shipping corridors in the world, with significant implications for global energy supply chains.
