Lahore Zoo Revives Animal Adoption Programme With Fees Up to Rs1 Million

Lahore Zoo has revived its animal adoption programme, allowing citizens, private organisations and educational institutions to sponsor wild animals and birds through annual adoption fees.

A private school has already adopted a male hippopotamus under the scheme, marking an early example of institutional participation in the programme.

Under the revised fee structure, adopting a lion or tiger costs Rs1 million annually. The programme also offers adoption options for several other animals, with fees varying according to the species.

Annual Adoption Fees at Lahore Zoo

The annual charges announced under the programme include the following rates.

  • Lions and tigers — Rs1 million
  • Hippopotamus — Rs600,000
  • Giraffe — Rs300,000
  • Other antelope — Rs150,000
  • Deer — Rs100,000

The scheme gives individuals and organisations an opportunity to support animals at the zoo through annual financial sponsorship. The programme’s revival could also encourage greater public involvement in wildlife awareness and animal conservation.

Why has Lahore Zoo closed for three months?

Schools and Universities Have Supported the Scheme

Lahore Zoo has previously attracted support from public figures and educational institutions. Actors Reema, Babra Sharif and Meera have adopted animals in the past, according to reports.

Educational institutions, including Punjab University and Government College University, have also participated in the programme.

The adoption of a male hippopotamus by a private school reflects the role that educational institutions can play in supporting zoo initiatives and introducing students to wildlife.

How the Programme Could Help Lahore Zoo

Animal adoption schemes can provide zoos with additional financial support and create opportunities for public engagement with wildlife. Depending on the programme’s rules, sponsors may also be able to raise awareness about particular species and encourage interest in animal welfare.

However, adoption through a zoo programme generally refers to financial sponsorship rather than taking an animal home. The animals remain under the zoo’s care, and their housing, feeding and veterinary treatment are managed by the institution.

People and organisations interested in adopting an animal should confirm the current fees, payment procedure and benefits directly with Lahore Zoo before applying.

The revival of the programme offers citizens, schools and other organisations a way to participate in supporting the zoo’s animal collection while promoting public interest in wildlife.
