Two separate coal mine accidents in China within the last 24 hours have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 12 lives, with two individuals still missing, as reported by China Central Television (CCTV) on Tuesday.

The most recent incident occurred late Monday night in Zhongyang County, Shanxi province, where an underground coal bunker owned by Taoyuan Xinlong Coal Industry Co Ltd collapsed.

The collapse claimed the lives of five workers, while two others remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations are currently underway at the site.

This incident comes amidst heightened concerns about overproduction in the coal mining sector, particularly in Shanxi province, which is China’s top coal-producing region.

The mining safety regulator had issued a warning recently urging measures to address overproduction and improve safety standards following a surge in fatalities in 2023.

In a separate incident, a gas explosion at a coal mine owned by Huaihe Energy in Anhui province claimed the lives of seven workers, with two individuals still missing. CCTV reported the tragic event late Monday evening.

The string of accidents underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring the safety of coal mining operations in China.

The government has been prompted to revise mining safety legislation due to the prevalence of deadly accidents. Last year saw a significant increase in such incidents, leading to a reevaluation of existing laws by officials.

These tragedies serve as a reminder of the risks associated with coal mining and the importance of stringent safety measures.

Following a coal mine accident in Pingdingshan, central China, last month that resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals, local authorities have initiated safety inspections to prevent further incidents.

China, officially the People’s Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. With a population exceeding 1.4 billion, it is the world’s second-most-populous country. China spans the equivalent of five time zones and borders fourteen countries by land.
