Elon Musk Says Instagram Is ‘For Girls’ in Fresh Social Media Debate

Elon Musk’s X Launches X Money With Visa Card and 6% APY

Elon Musk has triggered another discussion on social media after describing Instagram as a platform “for girls” in a brief post on X.

Musk made the comment on October 1 while responding to Geiger Capital, which announced that it had deleted its Instagram account and described the platform as “inherently a female app” with “zero benefit”.

“Instagram is for girls,” Musk replied.

The short exchange quickly attracted attention on X, where users debated whether social media platforms can be meaningfully associated with a particular gender.

Musk’s remark prompted mixed reactions from X users.

Some users agreed with his observation, while others joked that X itself is more commonly associated with men.

Others pushed back against the idea of assigning social media platforms a gender, pointing out that Instagram is used by people across different demographics for a wide range of purposes.

Users also highlighted Instagram’s role in areas including entertainment, business, activism, personal expression, body positivity and diverse representation.

One response took a sarcastic approach, suggesting that Musk may have reached his conclusion after creating an Instagram account himself.

Musk Has Made Similar Comments Before

This is not the first time Musk has made comments linking Instagram more closely with women.

During a social media discussion earlier this year, he reportedly criticised men who sent him links to their Instagram profiles and again described the platform as being primarily associated with women.

His latest post has revived the conversation around the different audiences and cultures that have developed around X and Instagram.

Musk and Zuckerberg’s Long-Running Rivalry

The exchange also comes amid Musk’s long-running rivalry with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Meta launched Threads in July 2023 as a text-focused social platform connected to Instagram. The service quickly emerged as a competitor to X and was followed by several public exchanges between Musk and Zuckerberg.

The competition between the two companies has since extended beyond social media.

Musk’s xAI and Meta are also competing in the artificial intelligence market, with both companies developing AI models and consumer-facing products.

For now, Musk’s latest Instagram comment remains a brief social media remark, but it has once again sparked discussion about how users perceive the audiences and identities associated with different online platforms.
