Former Punjab Health Minister and PTI leader Dr Yasmin Rashid has revealed a creative side of her life, showcasing intricate hand-embroidered designs she created on pillows and sofa cushions during her imprisonment.
The 76-year-old gynaecologist’s artwork appeared on social media around her birthday on September 21, attracting attention for its colourful patterns and the message of hope associated with the collection.
Rashid has named the collection “Beyond the Bars”, with individual titles given to several of her creations.
Using colourful threads and needles, she produced detailed designs featuring elephants, horses, owls and cats. Some pieces also show birds appearing to drink nectar from flowers, while butterflies are depicted around blooming plants.
The collection includes a range of other nature-inspired elements, including mountains, vines, floral designs and bouquets, adding bright colours and intricate detail to the cushions and pillows.
Art Created Behind Prison Walls
In a message accompanying the artwork, Rashid said the pieces were created behind prison walls rather than in a conventional art studio.
She described each stitch as a symbol of patience and each colour as a ray of hope, reflecting the emotions associated with creating the work during a difficult period.
Rashid wrote that when time appears to stand still and a person feels that their hands, mind and soul have become empty, creativity can offer a form of solace.

She also said that when circumstances are beyond a person’s control, creative expression can provide comfort and help maintain hope that beauty can emerge even during difficult and dark times.
The collection has drawn interest partly because of the contrast between its colourful imagery and the circumstances in which the pieces were made.
Rashid’s designs feature wildlife, flowers and other elements of nature, with each piece showcasing detailed handwork and a broad range of thread colours.

Rashid has also authored a book that is expected to be released soon.
Her embroidery collection and forthcoming book offer another glimpse into the creative work she has pursued during her period of incarceration.
