The Power Division has directed electricity distribution companies and the Pakistan Information Technology Company (PITC) to expedite the resolution of pending net-metering cases, particularly applications that had completed the required process before the government’s February 9, 2026 cutoff.
The review covers consumers who paid their demand notices before February 9, 2026 and completed other mandatory requirements, including obtaining net-metering licences, replacing or reprogramming electricity meters and securing meter connection orders.
PITC to update billing systems for eligible consumers
Under the new instructions, PITC has been tasked with reviewing pending net-metering applications and updating its billing systems and related software.
The objective is to ensure that eligible solar connections can be incorporated into the system without unnecessary delays once their required documentation and technical formalities have been completed.
The Power Division has also directed electricity distribution companies to verify payment records and other relevant documents to identify genuine pending applications.
Net-metering cases to be verified across power companies
The review will cover relevant pending cases involving Pakistan’s power distribution companies as well as K-Electric.
Distribution companies will be responsible for checking whether applicants completed the required steps within the specified timeframe and whether their cases meet the eligibility criteria.
The verification process is intended to distinguish legitimate pending applications from cases that do not fulfill the required conditions.
Solar consumers seek timely net-metering approvals
The government’s latest directive could provide relief to solar consumers who completed the required net-metering process before February 9, 2026, but have yet to receive final system approval or have their connections reflected in the relevant billing systems.
The Power Division said the purpose of the verification exercise is to ensure that consumers who fulfilled the requirements before the cutoff date are not subjected to unnecessary delays.
At the same time, authorities will only approve cases that meet the prescribed conditions after verification of payments, licences, meter replacement or reprogramming and meter connection orders.
The move comes amid growing demand for rooftop solar and net metering in Pakistan, as households and businesses increasingly install solar systems to reduce their reliance on conventional grid electricity.
