KP to Restart Free Cancer Medicines Program

The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to restart a project that provides free medicines to poor cancer patients and expand it across the province.

According to officials, the decision was taken during a meeting on the Annual Development Program 2026–27 chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Khan Afridi.

The chief minister directed that the scheme be revived without delay. He said cancer treatment costs are beyond the reach of many families in districts like Swat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan.

According to the Health Department, the program will now cover more government hospitals and aim to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential medicines.

Health sector projects approved

The meeting also reviewed major health sector proposals.

According to official briefing notes, the chief minister ordered early completion of the Khyber Institute of Child Health. He also directed immediate release of funds and asked departments to coordinate with the federal government for pending financing.

Projects discussed include a Health City, a general hospital at the Khan Institute of Organ Transplant, and upgrades of Basic Health Units and Rural Health Centers across the province.

According to officials, new oncology, burn, and kidney centers are planned for Mardan, while a clinical tower is proposed for Swabi.

Agriculture and water management

The chief minister also instructed the Agriculture Department to prepare a plan for wheat self-sufficiency.

According to the department, proposals include providing machinery to farmers, developing command areas for 22 small dams, and offering interest-free loans to agriculture graduates.

Rainwater and floodwater harvesting projects were also discussed for cities like Peshawar and Mardan to help recharge groundwater.

Youth and sports development

Youth-focused schemes were given priority.

According to officials, youth centers will be established in all districts. Sports complexes are planned in South Waziristan Upper, Mohmand, Chitral, and Battagram. Separate facilities will be developed for special children.

Emergency services expansion

The meeting also approved expansion of emergency response services.

New sub-stations of Rescue 1122 will be set up in the remaining tehsils. Rescue points will be created in densely populated areas. A mobile command and control center is also planned.

Budget focus

Chief Minister Afridi said the upcoming budget will focus on youth, low-income groups, and the middle class.

The government aims to improve access to health care, strengthen food security, and upgrade public services across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
