PM withdraws appointment of IRSA chairman over Sindh’s concerns.
The appointment of Zafar Mahmood as the chairman of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has been revoked following staunch opposition from the Sindh government.
The decision, made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was swiftly retracted after Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah voiced his concerns regarding the appointment.
Initial Appointment of IRSA chairman
Just a day before the withdrawal, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had issued an order appointing Zafar Mahmood, a retired grade 22 officer of the federal government, as the chairman of IRSA.
However, following Chief Minister Shah’s objections, the Prime Minister’s Office promptly issued a notification retracting the appointment, signalling a victory for the Sindh government’s protest.
Sindh’s Concerns
Chief Minister Shah’s objections stemmed from the violation of constitutional procedures, particularly the Council of Common Interests’ decision regarding the rotation basis for the appointment of the IRSA chairman.
He emphasised the need for adherence to this decision, which mandates appointments from different provinces on a rotational basis.
Additionally, concerns were raised about the potential influence of the federal government over IRSA’s independence.
Assurance and Reactions
Upon conveying his reservations to Prime Minister Shehbaz, Chief Minister Shah received assurance of the removal of Zafar Mahmood as IRSA chairman.
