The Islamabad High Court has expressed its dissatisfaction with the FIA Cybercrime summoning its director in the Mohsin Baig case.
Petitioners opposing the FIA raid on senior journalist Mohsin Baig, as well as cases against him under the PECA and terrorist legislation, were heard by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah.
During the hearing, the court voiced its displeasure with the FIA Cybercrime director, asking why the court did not order action against him. Justice Minallah inquired about the director who broke the law and the constitution. This is not a personal problem; it is a matter of safeguarding citizens’ rights.
This, according to the judge, is untenable in a democratic system. He said that he had already given clear instructions on the PECA guidelines.
The court also heard a separate plea asking for the FIR against the journalist to be dismissed.
Why shouldn’t the court let the police case go according to the law, Justice Minallah wondered. The raid was undoubtedly improper, but no one should be permitted to take law into their own hands, according to the judge, who also stated that the government’s writ should not be disputed.
The judge then halted the proceedings and called the FIA’s cybercrime director to appear in court at 11 a.m.
