New grade system to be introduced in matric and inter exams. In a sweeping reform, educational boards in Punjab, Pakistan, are set to discard the longstanding numerical grading system for matric and intermediate examinations, with the new system slated to come into effect in March 2024.

The decision marks a pivotal shift in the evaluation methodology, impacting both annual and supplementary exams.

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Rawalpindi recently made a groundbreaking announcement, signaling the discontinuation of numerical scores in favor of an innovative grading system.

This move is part of a broader initiative to modernize the education assessment framework, replacing a decades-old system with one designed to offer a more comprehensive evaluation of students’ capabilities.

One of the notable changes is the elimination of the previous 33 percent passing marks requirement, ushering in a new era where candidates must achieve a minimum of 40 percent to successfully navigate the examinations. The shift will be implemented in phases, starting with Class 9 and Intermediate Part I.

In addition to the fundamental alterations in passing criteria, future result cards will undergo a transformation.

The forthcoming documents will not only feature traditional letter grades but will also incorporate Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA), providing a more nuanced understanding of students’ academic performance.

The new grading system introduces a refined scale, with each grade correlating to a specific percentage range.

  • A++: 95-100%
  • A+: 90-94%
  • A: 85-89%
  • B++: 80-84%
  • B+: 75-79%
  • B: 70-74%
  • C: 60-69%
  • D: 50-59%
  • E: 40-49%
  • F: Below 40%

This revamped approach aims to address the evolving landscape of education, emphasizing a holistic evaluation that goes beyond numerical scores. The introduction of CGPA underscores a commitment to providing a more comprehensive and nuanced assessment of student’s academic prowess.

As educational institutions in Punjab gear up for this transformative change, educationists anticipate that the new grading system will not only align with global educational standards but also foster a more holistic understanding of students’ capabilities in a rapidly evolving academic landscape.
