The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed this extraordinary event, capturing images of the island rising from the water on November 1.
Situated approximately 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) south of mainland Japan and merely a kilometer from Iwo Jima, this tiny landmass has become a part of the Ogasawara Island chain.
The eruption, which occurred on October 30, was accompanied by a small explosion that sent a dark cloud of ash into the air, as reported by CNN.
Scientists, particularly from the University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute, have been monitoring the region for volcanic activity since last year.

Setsuya Nakada, an emeritus professor of volcanology at the University of Tokyo, revealed that magma had been accumulating beneath the surface for some time before finally erupting, leading to the formation of the new island.
The location of this geological phenomenon holds historical significance, being near Iwo Jima, a site of intense battles during World War II. US Marines and Japanese forces clashed on Iwo Jima, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives.

Interestingly, while Japan gains new islands, it occasionally loses them as well. The Guardian reported the disappearance of an island named Esanbe Hanakita Kojima in 2018.
Located 500 meters off the coast of Hokkaido, the island slipped beneath the waves unnoticed until author Hiroshi Shimizu visited the area, prompting the realization of its disappearance.
