Wapham’s life was hanging by a thread as he experienced excruciating chest pain during his routine morning run near his Morriston home.
His quick thinking and the timely response of his smartwatch, paired with the swift actions of his wife and medical professionals, played a pivotal role in his miraculous recovery.
The incident unfolded during Wapham’s usual 7 a.m. run when he was suddenly gripped by an intense pain in his chest. “My chest felt tight, and then I was on my hands and knees on the road. The pain was incredible,” he recalled.
Managing to use his smartwatch, Wapham contacted his wife, Laura, who wasted no time in rushing him to the hospital. Emergency services were alerted, and paramedics swiftly took charge of his care upon arrival.
At the hospital, doctors diagnosed Wapham with a heart attack caused by a complete blockage in one of his arteries.
He underwent a successful procedure in the hospital’s Cardiac Centre, where the blockage was removed, potentially saving his life.

Wapham spent six days in the coronary unit, recovering from the ordeal, and will continue his rehabilitation through an after-care service.
Reflecting on the shocking incident, Wapham expressed his surprise, stating, “It was a shock for everybody really, including my family. I’m not overweight and I try to keep myself fit, so I had no risk factors.”
He extended his heartfelt gratitude to his wife, Laura, and the dedicated hospital staff, praising their exceptional care and support during his critical hours.
