PTI forms committee for ‘political engagement’ with rivals. Pakistan’s ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, has announced the formation of a “political engagement committee” aimed at fostering dialogue with rival political parties in the lead-up to the general elections.

The move marks a departure from PTI’s traditionally hardline stance against opposition parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F).

The newly established five-member committee includes prominent figures such as Senator Ali Zafar, Senator Dr. Humayun Mohmand, Ali Muhammad Khan, Ali Asghar Khan, and Raoof Hasan, according to an official notification shared on the party’s social media account.

This development follows recent announcements from opposition parties indicating a willingness to forge alliances.

The PML-N and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) have declared their intention to “jointly contest” the upcoming polls, showcasing a growing unity among opposition forces.

PTI has also softened its stance against political opponents. The party has acknowledged and praised statements from the PPP advocating for a “level-playing field” in the upcoming elections. This conciliatory approach from PTI is indicative of the changing political dynamics in the country.

These developments unfold against the backdrop of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) recent announcement, made in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directives, confirming that the general elections will be held on February 8, 2024.

The move to establish dialogue with rival parties, coupled with opposition alliances, is expected to significantly impact the political landscape in Pakistan as the nation gears up for the upcoming polls.

Political analysts and experts are closely monitoring these developments, anticipating further shifts and alliances in the coming months as political parties intensify their efforts to strengthen their positions and secure victory in the upcoming elections.
