Nepra approves electricity price hike

‘Electric shock’ continues as NEPRA approves Rs3.28 per unit hike in power tariff

Nepra approves electricity price hike. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has given its nod for 40 paisas per unit increase in electricity prices.

This adjustment, attributed to fuel cost fluctuations in September 2023, will impact consumers’ bills from November onwards.

Notably, this revision excludes lifeline and K-Electric consumers, as stated in an official notification released on Wednesday.

Simultaneously, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has sent shockwaves through non-protected domestic users by announcing a staggering 172 percent increase in natural gas prices.

As Nepra approves electricity price hike, effective from November 01, 2023, this significant hike will substantially affect households relying on natural gas for their daily needs.

Under the new tariff structure, protected category consumers will be subject to a fixed charge of Rs400 per MMBtu.

In contrast, non-protected category consumers will face a fixed charge of Rs1,000 for consumption up to 1.5 hm3, escalating to Rs2,000 if their usage exceeds this threshold.

The protected category includes domestic consumers whose average consumption during the last four winter months (November to February) does not exceed 0.9 hm3.

Furthermore, Ogra has detailed the natural gas price adjustments based on consumption brackets.

For those utilizing up to 25 hm3 per month, the price has surged to Rs300 per MMBtu, indicating an increase of Rs100 per MMBtu.

Customers falling within the 60 hm3 bracket will now pay Rs600 per MMBtu, doubling the previous rate of Rs300.

Lastly, consumers with a monthly consumption of up to 100 hm3 will face a rate of Rs1,000 per MMBtu, reflecting a substantial Rs600 increase for this category.
