Tour in jeopardy, three more West Indian cricketers tested Covid positive

Officials said Thursday that five additional members of the West Indies cricket squad, including three players, had tested positive for Covid, putting the rest of their Pakistan trip in jeopardy.

On Saturday, four more members of the touring group tested positive, increasing the total number of positives to nine since they arrived last week for a Twenty20 and limited-over series.

Officials from Cricket West Indies said they’d meet with Pakistani colleagues later Thursday “after all members of the traveling group have been examined again” to see if they may proceed.

Any postponement would be a major setback for Pakistan, which has already had visits by New Zealand and England canceled due to security concerns in recent months.

Pakistan has won its opening two Twenty20 matches against the West Indies, with the dead rubber scheduled for later Thursday.

The three One-Day Internationals are set for December 18, 20, and 22.

West Indies authorities stated wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, all-rounder Justin Greaves, assistant coach Roddy Estwick, and physician Akshai Mansingh were among the latest positive test findings in the team.

On Saturday, left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell, all-rounders Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers, and a team official all tested positive for Covid-19.
