iPhone 18 May Miss Full Apple Intelligence Support Due to Lower RAM

Apple may restrict the full capabilities of the iPhone 18 after reports suggested the device will ship with only 9GB of RAM, potentially falling short of the requirements for advanced on-device AI features.

According to industry analysts, Apple Intelligence requires at least 12GB of RAM to run its complete suite of features smoothly, a threshold already matched by competing AI platforms on high-end Android devices.

Analyst points to memory cap on standard models

Well-known Apple supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple plans to use the same 9GB memory configuration for both the standard iPhone 18 and the lower-cost iPhone 18e.

The iPhone 18e is expected to launch in early 2027, likely between March and April, and will serve as a more affordable option within the lineup. However, the shared RAM limit could prevent both models from handling more complex Apple Intelligence tasks directly on the device.

Cost control appears to outweigh AI expansion

The reported decision reflects Apple’s effort to manage rising component costs and ensure supply stability. By limiting RAM on non-Pro models, Apple can keep prices lower while reserving premium AI features for higher-end devices.

This strategy, however, may widen the performance and feature gap between standard and Pro iPhones, especially as AI becomes a core part of the iOS experience.

Modest upgrade from previous generation

Kuo stated that the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will use six 1.5GB DRAM modules, totaling 9GB of RAM. This represents a small increase over the 8GB found in current standard iPhone 17 models.

Earlier reports suggested Apple was considering a jump to 12GB of RAM across the lineup, which would have enabled broader Apple Intelligence support. Those plans were reportedly scaled back due to memory shortages and higher manufacturing costs.

iOS 27 to rely more heavily on Apple Intelligence

Apple is expected to deepen system-level integration of Apple Intelligence with the launch of iOS 27. Many of these features rely on fast memory access to perform real-time language processing, image generation, and contextual understanding on the device itself.

With only 9GB of RAM, the standard iPhone 18 models may rely more heavily on cloud-based processing, which could result in slower response times and reduced offline functionality.

A20 chip brings performance and efficiency gains

Both the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are expected to feature Apple’s upcoming A20 chip. The processor is rumored to be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometre process.

The A20 chip could deliver around 15 percent better CPU performance and up to 30 percent improved power efficiency compared to the A19 series. It is also expected to include a stronger neural engine designed to support future AI workloads.

Despite these gains, analysts caution that RAM capacity remains a key bottleneck for demanding on-device AI tasks.

Pro and foldable models to receive more memory

Apple’s higher-end devices are expected to avoid these limitations. Reports indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro models and Apple’s first foldable iPhone could ship with 12GB of RAM.

The foldable device, rumored to launch under the iPhone Ultra branding, is expected to feature the more powerful A20 Pro chipset and will likely debut during Apple’s traditional fall 2026 launch window.

Growing divide in Apple’s AI strategy

If these reports prove accurate, Apple’s hardware strategy will clearly segment AI capabilities by price tier. While standard models may support basic Apple Intelligence features, the most advanced tools could remain exclusive to Pro and Ultra devices.

Apple has not officially confirmed RAM specifications or AI feature availability for the iPhone 18 lineup, but the reports highlight how memory decisions could shape the future user experience as AI becomes central to smartphone design.
