OpenAI is preparing one of the biggest changes to ChatGPT since its launch in 2022, as the company moves to transform the popular chatbot into a broader AI-powered superapp combining coding tools, intelligent agents, and third-party services.
According to reports, the updated experience will roll out across ChatGPT’s website and mobile applications in the coming weeks. The redesign will place increased emphasis on Codex, OpenAI’s coding-focused product, while introducing AI agents capable of performing complex, multi-step tasks with minimal user input.
Shift Beyond a Chatbot
The planned overhaul reflects OpenAI’s strategy to turn ChatGPT into a multi-purpose digital platform rather than a standalone conversational tool.
Under the new model, users will be able to move more seamlessly between general AI assistance, software development, image generation, task automation, and partner services, all within a single interface.
OpenAI is also working to reduce reliance on detailed prompts. The company believes its AI models will increasingly understand user intent based on context and activity, allowing tasks to be completed with fewer explicit instructions.
Unified Desktop Experience
The superapp strategy builds on earlier plans to integrate ChatGPT, Codex, and OpenAI’s Atlas web browser into a unified desktop application.
The effort is being led by OpenAI’s Chief of Applications Fidji Simo, with company President Greg Brockman also involved in the product redesign and internal restructuring.
The goal is to reduce fragmentation across OpenAI’s growing suite of products and create a more streamlined and consistent user experience.
IPO Preparations in Focus
The ChatGPT overhaul comes as OpenAI moves closer to a possible initial public offering.
The company is reportedly preparing to confidentially file IPO paperwork and is working with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley on the process. A public listing could take place as early as September, although the timeline has not been finalized.
Chief Executive Sam Altman has previously stated that OpenAI will go public when market conditions and long-term strategy align.
Codex, Agents, and Partner Services
Under the redesigned platform, ChatGPT users will be actively guided toward coding workflows, agent-based automation, and creative tools.
Partner services from companies such as Canva and Booking Holdings are also expected to be integrated, allowing users to complete design, travel, and productivity tasks without leaving ChatGPT.
The move is aimed at increasing revenue from enterprise customers, a segment that offers higher margins compared to consumer subscriptions.
Enterprise Competition Intensifies
The product overhaul is part of a broader push by OpenAI to strengthen its position in the enterprise market and compete more directly with Anthropic, which has gained traction among businesses and software developers.
ChatGPT currently has an estimated 900 million weekly users, giving OpenAI a large base to introduce new paid tools, enterprise features, and partner integrations as it enters its next phase of growth.
