The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency has summoned television actress and model Momina Iqbal and a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz lawmaker on Thursday, following her allegations of online harassment and death threats that went viral on social media a day earlier.
Punjab NCCIA head Muhammad Ali Waseem confirmed that both parties were called after the agency received Momina Iqbal’s formal application. He said the case would be decided strictly on merit and in accordance with the law.
According to Waseem, the summons were issued soon after the actress’s social media appeal gained widespread attention and triggered concern within the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leadership.
Sources told Dawn that senior party leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, took notice of the allegations and directed authorities to ensure the complaint was examined without delay.
The chief minister’s office reportedly sought a transparent inquiry to address the claims and protect the government’s credibility.
In her online post, tagged to the PML-N leadership, Momina Iqbal alleged that she had been facing online harassment, cyberbullying, and death threats for an extended period. She claimed that the alleged actions caused severe mental stress and trauma to both her and her family.
The actress further alleged that the individual behind the threats was a serving member of the Punjab Assembly belonging to the ruling party, though she did not publicly name the lawmaker.
She claimed she had previously approached both the NCCIA and the Federal Investigation Agency but received no relief.
Momina also alleged that attempts were made to discourage her from pursuing the case and suppress her complaints, including pressure from individuals linked to political offices.
She called on authorities to conduct an impartial investigation, ensure her family’s safety, and take strict legal action if the allegations are proven.
Warning of further action, Momina said she would hold a press conference and present all available evidence if the matter continued to be ignored, stressing that she would not remain silent in the face of alleged harassment and threats.
