Trump Evacuated From White House Correspondents’ Dinner After Shots Fired Outside

Washington, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump was swiftly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunfire was reported outside the venue, triggering a major security response.

The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton, where the president and First Lady were seated inside the ballroom moments before the annual media gathering was set to begin. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots outside the hall, prompting immediate action by security personnel.

Footage from inside the venue showed attendees dropping to the floor and taking cover behind tables as shouts of “Get down” and “Stay down” echoed through the room. Secret Service agents then moved rapidly to shield the president and escort him out, while armed officers secured the area.

In a statement posted later on Truth Social, Trump confirmed that he, the First Lady, the Vice President, and all Cabinet members were unharmed.

“Everyone is safe and in perfect condition,” Trump wrote, adding that he would address the nation from the White House shortly.

The president also said the event would be postponed and rescheduled within the next 30 days, pending guidance from law enforcement authorities. He praised the swift response of the United States Secret Service and local police, describing their actions as “quick and brave.”

Trump further stated that a suspect had been taken into custody, though officials have not yet released details about the individual or a possible motive. Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation.

An eyewitness account from Al Jazeera producer Chris Sheridan described a chaotic and frightening moment inside the venue.

“I heard what sounded like five gunshots. We could smell gunpowder and immediately dove to the ground,” Sheridan said, adding that the shots appeared to come from just outside the ballroom entrance.

Authorities have since secured the hotel and surrounding area, and further updates are expected following the president’s planned briefing.
