IHC accepts plea challenging Mohsin Naqvi’s appointment as PCB chief. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has made a significant decision by accepting a plea that challenges the appointment of Mohsin Naqvi as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

This move comes after a petition, presided over by IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, argued that while the appointment of the PCB chief falls within the prerogative of the prime minister, there is a clear distinction between the authority of an elected prime minister and that of a caretaker one.

Mohsin Naqvi, a prominent media channel owner who previously served as Punjab’s interim chief minister, was elected unopposed as the PCB chairman for a term of three years last month.

“I will try to fix the issues affecting Pakistan cricket. Reforms in cricket are the need of the hour,” he said while commenting on his appointment as the PCB chief.

His nomination for this position came from Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, and Naqvi pledged to address the pressing issues affecting Pakistan cricket, emphasizing the necessity for reforms within the sport.

Currently holding the esteemed position as the 37th chairman of the cricket board, Naqvi succeeded Zaka Ashraf, who vacated the role of chairman of the management committee back in January.

During the court proceedings, the petitioner’s counsel underscored the importance of maintaining the autonomy of the cricketing body, arguing that the authority to appoint the PCB head should rest solely with the organization itself.

It was asserted that a caretaker prime minister should not assume the role of the PCB’s patron-in-chief.

As IHC accepts plea challenging Mohsin Naqvi‘s appointment as PCB chief, notices were duly issued to Mohsin Naqvi and the recently-elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, signaling the commencement of legal proceedings related to the case.
