Lahore Qalandars Appoint Shaun Tait as Head Coach for PSL 2027

Lahore Qalandars Appoint Shaun Tait as Head Coach for PSL 2027

Lahore Qalandars have appointed former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait as their head coach for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2027, as the defending management looks to rebuild the team following a disappointing campaign in the previous season.

Lahore Qalandars Director Sameen Rana confirmed the appointment during a podcast, revealing that the franchise had already reached an agreement with Tait during the Global Super League (GSL) 2026.

The 43-year-old will replace South African coach Russell Domingo, who previously held the head coaching position. Tait had initially been appointed to lead Lahore Qalandars in the GSL 2026 and will now continue in the role for the upcoming PSL season.

Rana said the franchise had communicated its plans to Tait during the GSL campaign, making the latest appointment part of an arrangement agreed upon earlier.

The decision brings a familiar face into Lahore’s coaching setup as the franchise prepares for the 12th edition of Pakistan’s premier T20 competition.

Shaun Tait’s Coaching Experience in International and Franchise Cricket

Tait has built an extensive coaching career across international cricket and franchise tournaments, particularly in fast-bowling development.

He first joined Pakistan’s national team as fast-bowling coach in March 2022 under head coach Saqlain Mushtaq. He remained with the side until January 2023 before returning to Pakistan’s coaching setup in October 2026, replacing Australian coach Ashley Noffke.

The former Australia international has also worked with several PSL franchises. He served as bowling coach for Quetta Gladiators during PSL 2024 before joining Karachi Kings’ coaching staff for the 2025 season.

His international coaching assignments include working with Afghanistan during the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and coaching Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League.

In May 2025, Tait joined Bangladesh as their fast-bowling coach. During his tenure, he worked with emerging pace bowlers, including Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud and Tanzim Hasan Sakib. He later stepped down to spend more time with his family.

His experience across different cricketing environments is expected to strengthen Lahore Qalandars’ bowling strategy ahead of PSL 2027.

Shaun Tait’s Playing Career With Australia

Before entering coaching, Tait represented Australia in all three international formats and earned recognition for his exceptional pace.

He played three Test matches, 35 One-Day Internationals and 21 T20 Internationals for Australia. He was also part of Australia’s squad that won the 2007 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean.

Known for his aggressive approach and ability to generate extreme pace, Tait was one of Australia’s fastest bowlers during his international career.

His understanding of fast bowling, combined with his experience coaching international and franchise teams, could prove particularly useful for Lahore’s pace attack.

Lahore Qalandars Target PSL Comeback After Missing Playoffs

Lahore Qalandars will enter PSL 2027 looking to recover from an underwhelming 2026 campaign, in which they finished fifth and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The franchise struggled to maintain consistent performances despite having several experienced fast bowlers in its squad.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi leads the side, while Haris Rauf and Ubaid Shah provide additional pace options. However, the team’s bowling resources did not consistently translate into match-winning performances last season.

Lahore Qalandars have won three PSL championships, lifting the trophy in 2022, 2023 and 2025. The management will now expect Tait to help restore the team’s competitive edge and develop a more effective bowling combination.

His appointment also gives the coaching staff an opportunity to assess the squad’s strengths and identify areas requiring improvement before the next player auction.

PSL 2027 Auction and Tournament Schedule

The Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed January 23, 2027, as the date for the PSL 12 player auction.

The tournament will begin on March 18 and conclude on May 2, 2027, featuring eight franchises and 44 matches over 46 days.

The upcoming edition will also expand to five or six venues, giving the competition a wider presence across Pakistan.

With the auction approaching, Lahore Qalandars will need to make important squad decisions before the tournament begins. Tait is expected to play a significant role in evaluating bowling options and preparing the team for the new season.

The franchise will be hoping his international experience and familiarity with Pakistan cricket can help bring greater consistency and put Lahore Qalandars back among the leading contenders for the PSL 2027 title.
