Apple is still planning a major glass-focused redesign for its 20th-anniversary iPhone lineup in 2027, according to a new report, despite an earlier analyst claim that the project had been canceled.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, citing people familiar with Apple’s plans, reports that the company expects to launch redesigned iPhone Pro models next year featuring significantly more glass than current devices.
Glass Across the Front, Back, and Sides
The two upcoming models are internally known as V73 and V74. According to the report, Apple plans to use glass across both the front and back of the devices, with the material curving into the sides and meeting a thin metal band running around the middle.
These models are widely expected to represent Apple’s major iPhone redesign timed to the product’s 20th anniversary in 2027.
Recent reporting suggests the glass-heavy design will be applied to the Pro and Pro Max models rather than a separate, standalone anniversary device.
Gurman has previously identified the 2027 lineup as the iPhone 20 Pro (codenamed V73) and iPhone 20 Max (codenamed V74).
Apple Did Scrap a More Ambitious All-Glass Design
The apparent confusion between conflicting reports stems from an even more ambitious all-glass iPhone concept that Apple reportedly explored earlier in development.
According to Gurman’s latest reporting, Apple considered a version using substantially more glass but abandoned that approach due to the difficulty of manufacturing it at scale.
The more practical glass-centric design retaining a metal middle section remains in active development.
This distinction runs counter to an earlier Jefferies report from analyst Edison Lee, which claimed supply-chain checks indicated Apple’s all-glass September 2027 iPhone had been canceled because of poor production yields.
Jefferies had characterized the reported cancellation as a setback for Apple’s efforts to introduce higher-priced iPhones amid rising memory costs.
Taken together, the two reports may simply be describing two different concepts from Apple’s anniversary project: the highly ambitious all-glass design that was dropped, and the less extreme but still glass-heavy Pro models that remain on track.
Other Rumored Changes for the 2027 Pro Models
The 2027 Pro models have also been rumored to feature slightly larger displays, improved cooling, and a thinner overall design, though Apple has not confirmed any specific details about the devices.
For now, Gurman’s reporting suggests Apple’s major 20th-anniversary iPhone redesign remains on schedule, even if the company’s original, more ambitious vision has been scaled back to make large-scale production more feasible.
