Every Punjab Resident Now Carries an Estimated Debt Share
At current debt levels, each resident of Punjab effectively carries an estimated Rs13,538 in government debt, based on the province’s population.
The per capita figure offers a way of measuring how the province’s total liabilities translate down to individual citizens.
Notably, all of Punjab’s outstanding debt is external, meaning the province’s entire borrowing portfolio consists of foreign loans, with no domestic debt recorded in the latest figures.
Debt Sustainability Stays in Focus
Punjab’s rising liabilities come as provincial and federal governments across Pakistan continue to navigate fiscal constraints and financing needs.
With total debt nearing Rs1.76 trillion, analysts and policymakers are expected to keep a close watch on debt management and long-term financial sustainability in the months ahead.
