The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province, introducing temporary restrictions on swimming, bathing, and unauthorised boating to reduce the risk of accidents during the ongoing monsoon season.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the restrictions have been enforced as a precautionary measure to safeguard public safety amid heavy rainfall and rising water levels.
Swimming and Bathing Banned at Water Bodies
Under the order, bathing in rainwater accumulated in open or public places has been prohibited.
The notification also bans swimming in all major water bodies, including:
- Rivers
- Canals
- Dams
- Lakes
- Ponds
In addition, unauthorised boating in dams, rivers, canals, and distributaries has been prohibited for 60 days.
Government Cites Public Safety Concerns
Officials said the restrictions were imposed to prevent drowning incidents and other accidents that often increase during the monsoon season due to strong water currents and rising water levels.
The Punjab Home Secretary has directed district administrations and law enforcement agencies to ensure strict enforcement of Section 144 across the province.
Authorities have been instructed to monitor public places and take action against anyone found violating the restrictions.
Public Awareness Campaign Launched
Alongside the enforcement measures, the provincial government has launched a public awareness campaign to educate citizens about the dangers associated with swimming and boating during the monsoon season.
Residents have been urged to avoid entering rivers, canals, dams, and other water bodies and to follow official safety advisories issued by the authorities.
The government said the temporary restrictions are intended to protect lives until weather conditions improve and the risk posed by heavy monsoon rains subsides.
