Pakistani freelancers generated a record $1.76 billion in foreign exchange during fiscal year 2025-26, reflecting a 78 percent increase from $984 million recorded in the previous fiscal year, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
The significant growth was driven by higher export earnings from both IT and non-IT freelancers, highlighting the expanding role of Pakistan’s digital workforce in the national economy.
IT freelancers cross $1.16 billion
IT freelancers contributed more than $1.16 billion during FY26, compared with $779 million in FY25.
The sector recorded a 49 percent year-on-year increase, adding approximately $385 million in export earnings.
The continued growth reflects rising global demand for Pakistani software developers, programmers, designers, digital marketers, and other technology professionals working through international freelancing platforms.
Non-IT freelance exports nearly triple
Non-IT freelancers also posted exceptional growth during the fiscal year.
Export earnings from the segment increased to $592 million, up from $205 million in FY25.
The category recorded a 188 percent increase, contributing nearly $387 million in additional foreign exchange earnings over the previous year.
Freelancers strengthening Pakistan’s economy
Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) Chairman Ibrahim Amin said freelancers are making an increasingly important contribution to Pakistan’s economy by generating foreign exchange and supporting tax revenues.
He said the country’s freelancing industry has evolved into one of Pakistan’s leading export sectors, with earnings now surpassing those of several traditional industries.
“Pakistani freelancers are not only improving their own livelihoods through talent and hard work but are also contributing to the development of a more productive, skilled and digitally empowered workforce,” Amin said.
Pakistan among global freelancing leaders
Industry estimates suggest Pakistan is home to nearly three million full-time and part-time freelancers, making it the fourth-largest freelancing workforce in the world.
The latest SBP figures underline the growing importance of freelancing as a major source of export income and foreign exchange, reinforcing Pakistan’s position as a leading supplier of digital services in the global marketplace.
