In a tragic turn of events, the body of a young female student, namely Umm-e-Habiba, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the Punjab University hostel on Sunday.
Habiba was a fifth-semester student at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) of the university and was living in a girls’ hostel.
Her body was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in a room of the hostel. The deceased went to her friend’s room at around 3pm and said that she wanted to rest there.

Her friend allowed her to stay in her room and left. When the friend came back at 7:30pm, she found it locked from inside.
She knocked on the door but did not find any reply. She immediately called the security of the hostel.
The security guards first knocked at the room and then broke its door open and found the body of the girl hanging from the ceiling fan.
The elder sister of Habiba was also a student of the same department and living in the hostel. Muslim Town police and the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) collected evidence.
The PU spokesperson suspected that the girl might have committed suicide but said that police would probe the cause behind the incident.

Separately, Punjab police on Sunday arrested a security guard of a Punjab college located in the Gulberg area of Lahore for allegedly raping a student.
According to the DIG Operations, the accused guard involved in the rape incident disappeared after the news of the incident went viral on social media.
The police immediately detained the accused security guard of the private college within 10 hours of the incident in another city – the outskirts of Lahore.
The spokesperson added that efforts to locate the victim and her family, as well as legal proceedings, are underway.
