Woman dies by suicide after husband racks up betting debt of ₹ 1 crore in IPL.
In a heart-wrenching incident in Karnataka‘s Chitradurga district, the life of a young woman came to a tragic end, reportedly due to the mounting pressures stemming from her husband’s involvement in high-stakes betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches.
Ranjitha, married to Darshan Babu since 2020, was found dead in her home on March 18, leaving behind a grieving family and a two-year-old son.
Financial Strain and Betting Debts:
According to reports, Darshan Babu, employed as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga, had been deeply entangled in the web of IPL betting from 2021 to 2023.
His penchant for placing major bets, often backed by borrowed funds, had driven the couple into dire financial straits.
Allegedly, Darshan had accrued a staggering debt of over ₹1.5 crore, primarily to sustain his betting habit. Despite managing to repay a portion of this debt, an outstanding loan of ₹84 lakh still loomed over him, adding to the couple’s financial woes.
Coercion and Exploitation:
Ranjitha’s father, Venkatesh, revealed that his daughter had become aware of Darshan’s involvement in betting in 2021.
He claimed that Darshan was coerced into the world of betting by unscrupulous individuals who preyed on his vulnerabilities, promising lucrative returns in exchange for blank cheques as collateral.
This coercion allegedly led Darshan further down the path of financial ruin, exacerbating the distress faced by the young couple.
Suicide and Allegations:
Venkatesh, in his complaint, cited his daughter’s severe distress caused by incessant harassment from moneylenders as the primary motive behind her tragic decision to end her life.
He accused 13 individuals of being complicit in lending money to Darshan, ultimately leading to Ranjitha’s untimely demise.
A suicide note reportedly left by Ranjitha detailed the extent of the harassment endured by the couple, shedding light on the dire circumstances preceding her suicide.
Call for Awareness and Support:
This devastating incident underscores the urgent need for heightened awareness and support mechanisms to address problem gambling and its devastating repercussions on individuals and families.
It highlights the importance of regulating and monitoring betting activities to prevent exploitation and mitigate associated risks.
Furthermore, there is a pressing need for enhanced financial literacy initiatives to empower individuals against falling prey to exploitative schemes and to navigate financial challenges more effectively.
