The Defense Minister of the Maldives, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, engaged in discussions with Major General Zhang Baoqun from China’s Office for International Military Cooperation to elevate defense collaboration between the two nations.
In addition to the defense pact, China exhibited its commitment to strengthening ties by gifting 12 eco-friendly ambulances to the Maldives.
This gesture was marked by a ceremonial handover at the Ministry of Health, presided over by Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin.
The visit of the Chinese military delegation coincided with the Maldives’ authorization of a port call for the advanced research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03.

This move contrasted with Sri Lanka’s recent decision to deny entry to the same ship, citing apprehensions about foreign research vessels operating in the region, particularly those with potential military applications.

Meanwhile, India confirmed the dispatch of civilian technical experts to replace its military personnel stationed in the Maldives.
The Maldives, traditionally considered a close ally of India, has witnessed a shift in its geopolitical stance under President Muizzu’s leadership.
This change is evidenced by the government’s review of over 100 bilateral agreements with India, signed during previous administrations.
