Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan joins politics. Renowned Bangladeshi cricket icon, Shakib Al Hasan, has officially stepped into the political arena, expressing his intention to contest in the upcoming general elections on January 7.

Seeking a nomination from the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, Shakib has acquired nomination forms to vie for candidacy in three constituencies, with his bid awaiting confirmation from the party’s parliamentary board led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The political landscape in Bangladesh is marked by the impending boycott of the polls by major opposition parties.

Amid this backdrop, Shakib, hailed for his popularity among the nation’s youth, has emerged as a high-profile entrant into the political realm.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a dominant figure in Bangladeshi politics for the past 15 years, is poised for a potential fourth term, given the opposition’s planned boycott.

While her leadership has coincided with impressive economic growth, concerns raised by Western nations regarding democratic erosion and accusations of vote-rigging by the opposition in past elections linger.

The foray of cricketing personalities into politics is not entirely unprecedented in South Asia, where the sport commands fervent popularity.

However, the decision to transition to politics while actively engaged in a playing career remains relatively uncommon.

Notably, former cricket captain Mashrafe Mortaza made a similar move in 2018, securing a parliamentary seat for the ruling party before relinquishing his cricketing pursuits to focus on politics.

Shakib Al Hasan, currently the captain across all three formats for Bangladesh, is presently sidelined due to a finger injury, forcing him to forego the impending Test series against New Zealand.

The injury, sustained during a World Cup match against Sri Lanka, drew attention for Shakib’s unusual appeal against Angelo Mathews, resulting in international cricket witnessing its first-ever timed out.

As Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan joins politics, his candidacy symbolizes a notable development in the evolving relationship between cricketing stardom and political aspirations in Bangladesh.
