Lemons are a natural source of vitamin C and antioxidants. According to US FoodData Central, 100 grams of lemon contains about 53 milligrams of vitamin C. This nutrient supports metabolism and helps protect body cells from oxidative stress.
Because of this, lemon water is often promoted for detoxification, clearer skin, and fat burning. However, experts say there is little scientific evidence to support these broader health claims.
Hydration is the main benefit
Dr Bui Thi Duyen, deputy chief of nutrition at Military Hospital 175 in Vietnam, said the primary benefit of lemon water is simple hydration after a night’s sleep, along with a modest intake of vitamin C.
She dismissed the popular belief that lemon water flushes toxins from the body or directly leads to weight loss.
“There is currently no scientific evidence that lemon water burns calories,” she said. According to Dr Duyen, any weight-related benefit likely comes from replacing sugary drinks, such as sweetened teas or sodas, with lemon water.
Risks to teeth and digestion
Some people believe acidic drinks improve digestion. But Dr Duyen said the effect varies by individual and can be harmful in some cases.
The American Dental Association warns that frequent consumption of acidic drinks, including lemon juice, can gradually erode tooth enamel. The risk increases if the drink is highly concentrated or oral hygiene is poor.

Health experts also caution that drinking lemon juice on an empty stomach may irritate the stomach lining, particularly in people with gastritis, acidity, or acid reflux.
How to drink it safely
Dr Duyen advised using the juice of half a lemon mixed with 200 to 300 millilitres of water and keeping added sugar to a minimum. She also recommended drinking through a straw or rinsing the mouth afterward to reduce acid contact with teeth.
People with existing stomach conditions were urged to be especially careful and to stop if symptoms worsen.
Experts stressed that no single food or morning habit determines overall health. Instead, they recommend a balanced diet, regular meal timing, adequate hydration, and a focus on vegetables, quality protein, and reduced sugar and processed foods.
