According to nutritionists, red onions contain antioxidants, flavonoids, minerals, and relatively high water content that may help replenish fluids and salts lost through excessive sweating.

Health specialists say summer heat can trigger symptoms including dizziness, headaches, nausea, weakness, dehydration, and fatigue. Red onions are believed to assist the body in managing some of these effects because of their natural cooling properties.

Dietitian Dr. Hina Fatima said on May 7, 2026, that red onions can be a useful seasonal food addition during hot weather conditions.

“Red onions contain plant compounds that may support circulation and hydration, especially when included as part of balanced summer meals,” she said.

Nutritionists explain that consuming raw red onions may help reduce bloating and support beneficial intestinal bacteria.

They recommend using sliced onions in salads, raita, sandwiches, and homemade chutneys as part of regular summer diets.

According to food experts, the sulfur compounds and flavonoids found in red onions may assist digestion while helping maintain water balance inside the body.

A recent nutritional study cited by health specialists also suggested that naturally occurring compounds in red onions may improve blood circulation and reduce stress caused by excessive heat exposure.

Dr. Salman Javed, a Lahore-based physician, said dietary adjustments can support the body during heatwaves but should be combined with other preventive measures.

“People should increase water intake, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and consume fresh seasonal foods alongside proper hydration,” he said on May 7, 2026.

Heatwaves Continue Across Pakistan

Pakistan has witnessed increasingly severe summer temperatures in recent years, with heatwaves affecting both urban and rural areas.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, several southern and central districts are expected to remain above normal seasonal temperatures during the coming weeks.
