Chandigarh University shuts down for 1 week

Massive protests that followed reports that a female student had secretly recorded other females in a hostel washroom caused an Indian university to be closed for one week.

In response to rumours that multiple recordings of women bathing had been broadcast online without their permission, both at the campus and online, thousands of students at Chandigarh University, a privately managed institution in the northern province of Punjab, protested on Sunday. Several tweets claimed that the woman had recorded them and shown them to her boyfriend.

This has been refuted by the university and the Punjab police. The woman, her boyfriend, and another man have subsequently been arrested on accusations that include distributing private photographs of people without their agreement, despite police authorities’ claims on Sunday that they had only discovered films of the woman on her phone.

“The investigation is under way and the accused’s phone has been sent for forensic examination,” said Rupinder Bhatti, a senior Punjab police official who deals a special investigation team looking into the case.

Ms. Bhatti further refuted a newspaper report that cited unnamed police sources as saying that the woman’s phone included a second video that looked to be of a different girl.

After the administration and police acceded to some of their requests, the students called off their demonstration late on Sunday. However, it continues to be a hot topic online, where it sparked a tornado of false information.
