The United Arab Emirates has introduced a new fee for playing music in cafes, hotels, and malls, as authorities move to regulate commercial music use starting in December.
According to officials, the new license fee will apply to commercial venues — including cafes, hotels, malls, and other business locations — where music is played publicly for customers.
Annual License Required, With Exemptions
The music license will be valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Educational institutions, government offices, and non-commercial events will remain exempt from the fee.
Fee Aimed at Protecting Artist Copyrights
Authorities said the new licensing system has been introduced to protect the copyright rights of singers and other rights holders whose music is played in commercial settings.
Officials warned that action will be taken against venues found playing music without a valid license once the requirement takes effect.
