Police have launched a criminal investigation after a drone carrying approximately five kilograms of heroin crashed in a residential neighbourhood of Narang Mandi, triggering fresh concerns over the growing use of unmanned aerial vehicles in narcotics smuggling.
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Muridke Tehsil, where residents alerted authorities after the drone fell onto the roof of a house.
Drone reportedly crashed due to heavy load
According to police officials, the drone is believed to have gone down because of the excessive weight of the narcotics it was carrying. Law enforcement teams responded immediately after receiving reports of the crash and secured the area to prevent tampering with evidence.
The drone was recovered from a house located in Mohalla Rafiqabad, a densely populated part of Narang Mandi, raising concerns about the potential risk to civilians had the device caused an explosion or structural damage.
Police recover heroin and drone equipment
Sheikhupura District Police Officer Bilal Zafar Sheikh confirmed that officers from Narang Police Station reached the scene and took both the drone and the recovered drugs into custody.
During the initial inspection, police found a black drone measuring around three feet in length. Inside the drone, investigators recovered a packet wrapped in yellow tape and fitted with reflective lights.
Further examination confirmed that the packet contained approximately five kilograms of heroin.
Case registered against unknown suspects
Police have registered a case against unidentified suspects and intensified patrolling across the area as part of precautionary security measures. Investigators are currently analysing the drone’s components and flight capability to determine its point of origin and intended destination.
Officials said forensic and technical assistance may be sought to trace the drone’s launch location and identify those involved in planning and executing the operation.
Cross-border link not yet confirmed
The District Police Officer said it remains unclear whether the drone was being used for cross-border drug trafficking or for transporting narcotics within the country.
Authorities are gathering intelligence to establish whether the incident is linked to an organised drug network operating in Sheikhupura District or nearby regions.
Police officials acknowledged that the use of drones presents new challenges for law enforcement, particularly in detecting and intercepting aerial smuggling routes.
Growing concern over drone-based drug trafficking
The incident has renewed debate over the misuse of commercial and modified drones for illegal activities, especially narcotics trafficking. In recent years, law enforcement agencies across Pakistan have reported an increase in attempts to use drones to bypass checkpoints and border surveillance.
Security experts warn that without stronger regulation, tracking systems, and counter-drone technology, such incidents could become more frequent.
Investigation continues as search expands
Police said special teams are working to identify those responsible and trace any wider network involved in the operation. Surveillance footage from nearby areas is also being reviewed to gather additional leads.
Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious drone activity, emphasizing that community cooperation is critical in addressing emerging security threats linked to advanced technology.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police vowing to pursue those responsible and prevent similar incidents in the future.
