Fifth-generation mobile services are gradually expanding across Pakistan, with limited commercial availability in select cities and areas. At present, Jazz and Zong are leading the rollout, while Ufone has received regulatory approval but has yet to launch live 5G services.
Despite growing availability, accessing 5G on a smartphone is not always automatic. Several technical and network-related conditions must be met before users can connect.
What You Need to Use 5G in Pakistan
To access 5G, users must have a 5G-enabled smartphone, active 5G coverage in their area, updated device software, and correct network settings.
A phone that only supports 4G cannot connect to 5G through a software update. The device must include 5G hardware and support the specific frequency bands used by local operators.
Imported smartphones require additional caution. Different regional variants of the same phone model often support different network bands. Users should check the exact model number rather than relying on the phone’s brand name alone.
PTA approval is also essential. The SIM used for 5G must be PTA-verified, with mobile data working normally.
Check 5G Coverage First
Before changing phone settings, users should confirm whether their operator offers 5G coverage in their location.
Jazz and Zong have published coverage maps indicating areas where 5G is available. However, these maps are indicative only. Actual signal strength may vary due to buildings, distance from towers, weather conditions, terrain, network congestion, and device compatibility.
If a user is outside a 5G-enabled area, the phone will remain connected to 4G even if it supports 5G.
Confirm Phone Compatibility
Users should verify whether their device is officially supported by their operator. Not all 5G phones are compatible with every network configuration in Pakistan.
The easiest way to check the exact model number is through the phone’s settings. On Android, this is available under “About Phone.” On iPhone, users can go to Settings, then General, and tap About.
Once confirmed, the model should be compared with the operator’s supported handset list.
How to Enable 5G on iPhone
iPhone users can enable 5G through cellular settings.
Open Settings, tap Cellular, then Cellular Data Options. Select Voice and Data and choose 5G Auto or 5G On.
5G Auto is generally recommended as it balances speed and battery usage by switching between 5G and 4G depending on signal quality.
How to Enable 5G on Samsung Phones
On Samsung devices, open Settings and tap Connections. Select Mobile Networks, then Network Mode.
Choose the option that includes 5G, usually listed as 5G/LTE/3G/2G Auto Connect.
If the option is missing, the phone may not support 5G, may need a software update, or may not be supported by the operator.
Enable 5G on Other Android Phones
On most Android devices, open Settings and go to Mobile Network or Network and Internet.
Select the SIM used for mobile data, then open Preferred Network Type or Network Mode. Choose an option that includes 5G.
On dual-SIM phones, ensure mobile data is assigned to the SIM from the 5G-enabled operator.
Update Software and Check SIM
Some phones require updated software or carrier settings before 5G becomes visible. Users should install the latest system updates and restart the device.
Operators also advise using a 5G-compatible SIM. Older SIM cards may not support 5G services.
Why 5G May Not Appear
The most common reason is lack of coverage. Pakistan’s 5G rollout is still limited and expanding in phases.
Other reasons include unsupported phone models, missing software updates, incorrect network mode settings, or selecting the wrong SIM for mobile data.
Why Phones Switch Between 5G and 4G
Phones may automatically switch between 5G and 4G during normal use. This can happen when users move indoors, leave a 5G coverage area, or when the signal becomes unstable.
Some devices also default to 4G during idle periods to save battery and switch back to 5G during active data use. This behavior is normal and does not indicate a fault.
As Pakistan’s 5G network continues to expand, compatibility and coverage are expected to improve. Until then, users may experience varying performance depending on location, device, and network conditions.
