The marketing campaign for Scary Movie is tapping heavily into early internet nostalgia as the franchise prepares for its return to cinemas on June 5.
Ahead of the release, Wayans Bros. Entertainment has launched an interactive promotional website titled Subservient Ghostface, allowing fans to issue typed commands to the franchise’s masked slasher parody and watch him respond on screen.
Interactive website brings Ghostface to life
The website invites users to type instructions into a command box, triggering short video responses from Ghostface. Depending on the input, the character may dance, sing, cry, act confused, or perform absurd gags drawn from a large library of pre-recorded footage.
While the experience appears spontaneous, the interactions are powered by carefully scripted and filmed clips designed to mimic real-time responses. According to industry publication AdAge, the concept is meant to recreate the illusion of live interaction while keeping production fully controlled.
A nod to early viral internet culture
The campaign has drawn attention for reviving one of the most iconic viral marketing ideas of the early internet era.
In 2004, Burger King launched the now-legendary Subservient Chicken campaign, created by advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky. The website featured a man in a chicken suit who appeared to follow almost any command typed by users, aligning with Burger King’s “Have It Your Way” slogan.

The campaign became a defining moment in digital advertising, generating hundreds of millions of views at a time when social media platforms had yet to dominate online culture.
Modern twists and hidden Easter eggs
Subservient Ghostface updates the original concept with horror-comedy elements and modern internet references. The site includes multiple hidden Easter eggs tied to memes, online trends, and current events.
Typing “AI,” for example, triggers a visual gag involving bottled water, referencing discussions around the heavy water usage of modern data centers. Other commands unlock references to internet phenomena such as the Backrooms meme.
Entering “Spiderman” causes multiple Ghostface characters to appear on screen and recreate the famous pointing meme associated with the superhero.
Scary Movie returns after long break
The interactive campaign also serves as a reminder that Scary Movie is returning after a lengthy absence. The upcoming release marks the sixth installment in the franchise and arrives 13 years after Scary Movie 5.
The new film reunites several key members of the Wayans family with the series they originally created. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, and Craig Wayans co-wrote the screenplay.
The film is directed by Michael Tiddes, continuing the franchise’s tradition of blending pop culture parody with slapstick horror comedy.
With its nostalgic digital approach and renewed creative involvement from the Wayans family, the campaign positions Scary Movie as both a throwback and a modern reboot aimed at longtime fans and a new generation of internet-savvy viewers.
