Australia captain Pat Cummins has indicated that he may step away from franchise cricket next year as he looks to manage his workload ahead of a demanding international schedule and the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Speaking to media, Cummins said he faces an important decision regarding his playing commitments but made it clear that retirement from Test cricket or One-Day Internationals is not under consideration. He said discussions with his franchise and Cricket Australia would determine the best path forward.
Heavy International Calendar Ahead
The Australian fast bowler acknowledged that the buildup to the 2027 World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, could force him to miss the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Australia’s upcoming schedule includes a Test tour of India, an Ashes series, and an extended period of ODI preparation ahead of the global tournament. Cummins said his priority remains managing fitness and performance across formats.
Franchise Cricket Could Take a Back Seat
Cummins has previously captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and has been a regular feature in franchise leagues. However, he suggested that franchise cricket may have to be sacrificed to ensure peak readiness for Australia’s most important assignments.
He said Test cricket remains his top priority, followed closely by Australia’s World Cup campaign, where he is expected to play a central leadership role.
Focus on Longevity and Performance
Australia’s team management has increasingly emphasised workload management, particularly for fast bowlers, as the side balances success across formats. Cummins’ comments reflect a broader trend among elite international players who are reassessing franchise commitments in favour of longevity and performance at major ICC events.
No final decision has been announced, but Cummins’ remarks suggest that Australia’s World Cup ambitions could outweigh franchise cricket opportunities in the coming year.
