Punjab Restores Normal Business Hours After Eid ul Azha Relaxation Ends

LAHORE: The Punjab government has reinstated regular business operating hours across the province following the expiry of the temporary relaxation granted to markets and restaurants on the occasion of Eid ul Azha.

Under the revised schedule, markets, shops, shopping malls, and commercial centers are now required to close by 8pm. Restaurants, marriage halls, and food outlets will be allowed to continue operations until 10pm, officials said.

The Eid-related exemption, which permitted businesses to remain open beyond the prescribed timings, formally ended on Monday. Provincial authorities have directed district administrations and law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the closure schedule.

According to officials, the decision is part of the Punjab government’s broader energy conservation policy aimed at reducing electricity consumption, particularly during peak evening hours.

The move comes amid rising power demand and ongoing efforts to manage load and reduce pressure on the national grid.

However, the restoration of early closing hours has drawn criticism from the trading community. Business representatives argue that reduced operating hours could negatively impact sales and overall commercial activity.

Traders say customer footfall typically increases during the evening, especially in summer months when people prefer to visit markets after office hours and once temperatures begin to drop.

They warn that the 8pm closure limit for markets could significantly reduce daily revenues for small and medium-sized businesses.

Several trader associations have urged the provincial government to review the policy and introduce greater flexibility in business timings. According to business leaders, extended evening hours would benefit both consumers and retailers while supporting economic activity.

Despite the criticism, officials maintain that energy conservation remains a priority and that compliance with the prescribed hours will be monitored closely in the coming days.
