Female Student Dies After Fall From Hostel at Fatima Jinnah Medical University Lahore

A female medical student of Fatima Jinnah Medical University lost her life on Tuesday night after falling from the fourth floor of a girls’ hostel, triggering renewed concern over student safety and mental health in educational institutions across Pakistan.

According to initial reports, the incident came to light when fellow hostel residents found the student lying critically injured and immediately informed the university administration.

The student, who belonged to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, was residing in the government hostel on the FJMU campus at the time of the incident.

Medical sources said the victim sustained severe head and neck injuries along with multiple bone fractures.

She was rushed in critical condition to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where she was provided emergency treatment before being shifted to the operating theatre. Despite undergoing major neurosurgery performed by a team of senior doctors, she could not survive her injuries.

FJMU Vice Chancellor Khalid Masood Gondal confirmed that the student’s condition remained extremely critical throughout the treatment. He stated that the incident occurred within the premises of the girls’ hostel and suggested that the fall may have been accidental.

However, eyewitness accounts and sources within the institution have claimed that the student may have jumped from the building in an apparent suicide attempt. No immediate reason for the incident has been officially confirmed.

In response, the university administration has formed a medical board comprising senior doctors, along with a separate five-member fact-finding committee tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The committee has been directed to submit its findings within 24 hours. Dean of Undergraduate Studies Bilquis Shabbir has been appointed to head the inquiry panel.

The tragic death has intensified concerns over the safety, well-being, and mental health of students living in hostels, particularly in medical universities where academic pressure is high.

The incident follows earlier reports of students, including a female student from a private university in Raiwind, who also died after falling from buildings, raising alarm over a troubling pattern.

Authorities and education experts have emphasized the need for stronger mental health support systems, enhanced hostel security, and proactive counseling services to prevent such incidents and ensure a safer environment for students across the country.
