Donkey prices in Pakistan soar as demand from China increases.

The price of donkeys in Pakistan has soared in recent months, reaching as high as Rs. 300,000 per donkey as demand from China increases.

According to the report, the demand from China has increased as donkey hides are used in the production of many Chinese cosmetics and medicines.

The report highlighted that due to the increase in prices of donkeys, local buyers are finding it hard to afford donkeys and local sale and purchase has shrunk.

The report said that traders involved in the export of donkey hides to China are actively buying donkeys to meet the Chinese demand.

Earlier in July 2024, the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce recommended authorities to export whole, living donkeys to China and not just the hides.

The committee was also informed that the current donkey exports to China had no restrictions while protocols for exporting donkey meat are currently in development.
