Imran Riaz has been arrested in Zaman Park attack case.
Renowned journalist and political commentator Imran Riaz Khan has found himself embroiled in legal proceedings yet again, this time over allegations of orchestrating an attack on police officials and vandalizing government vehicles outside Zaman Park in Lahore.
The incident has sparked considerable controversy, especially given Khan’s vocal critiques of powerful quarters within the country.
Khan, who was already under the custody of the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) regarding a separate graft case, was brought before an anti-terrorism court where police officials sought his physical remand.
Present at the hearing were Khan’s legal representatives including Asad Manzoor Butt, Azhar Siddique, and Mian Ali Ashfaq. However, the decision regarding the physical remand petition is pending as ATC Judge Naveed Iqbal has yet to issue a ruling.
This development comes on the heels of a recent judicial remand approval by a district and sessions court in Lahore concerning Khan’s involvement in a corruption case.
The ACE had brought forward allegations against Khan and his father regarding a contract related to Dharabi Lake in Chakwal, alleging inflated pricing that resulted in losses to the national exchequer.
The arrest of the Pakistani TV show host and YouTuber was confirmed by his lawyer, Mian Ali Ashfaq, who disclosed that Khan was apprehended during a late-night raid at his Lahore residence.
Ashfaq further revealed that Khan was aware of the ACE’s intentions prior to his arrest, emphasizing concerns for his client’s safety.
Imran Riaz Khan, known for his outspoken views and controversial commentary, has often found himself at odds with influential factions within the country.
In a previous instance last year, Khan was held in custody for over four months before being released unharmed.
As Imran Riaz arrested in Zaman Park attack case, during the court proceedings, anti-corruption officials pressed for Khan’s physical remand, citing the necessity for interrogation. However, Khan’s legal team vehemently opposed the request.
Following deliberation, the judge dismissed the plea for physical remand by the ACE, instead ordering Khan to be held in judicial remand pending further proceedings.
