Islamabad court releases Nawaz Sharif’s seized assets in Toshakhana case. An accountability court in the federal capital has ordered the release of assets belonging to former Prime Minister and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif.

The decision, issued by Accountability Judge Mohammad Bashir, marks a notable shift in the legal proceedings surrounding Sharif, who had previously been declared a proclaimed offender in the Toshakhana case due to non-appearance.

The court’s move to seize Sharif’s assets was initiated in October 2020 when, in response to repeated summons being ignored, the trial court directed the confiscation of his properties.

This included substantial holdings such as 1650 kanals of agricultural land, vehicles, and bank accounts, among other assets, all by the court’s directives.

However, the recent order to release these seized assets came in the wake of Nawaz Sharif’s personal appearance before the court upon his return to Pakistan.

The former Prime Minister, concluding a four-year period of self-imposed exile in the UK, returned home last month.

His departure to the UK had been prompted by a conviction and prison sentence, during which time he sought medical treatment in the British capital.

Nawaz Sharif, a septuagenarian politician and cardiac patient, made a notable return to the country, traveling from Dubai Airport to Islamabad in a private jet.

Subsequently, he addressed a substantial public gathering at Lahore’s historic Minar-e-Pakistan.

As Islamabad court releases Nawaz Sharif’s seized assets in Toshakhana case, this turn of events raises questions about the future trajectory of legal proceedings against Sharif and adds a new chapter to the political landscape of Pakistan.
